Commission approves two memorial bench/tree donations for Canyon Park and Brentwood Park

The Parks and Community Services Commission on Nov. 13 approved two donor-funded memorial installations: a memorial tree with bench and plaque at Canyon Park and a memorial bench with plaque at Brentwood Park.

Staff presented both requests. For Canyon Park, Ryan said the donor (Danielle Sandifer) proposed a purple orchid tree and bench located on the lower lawn near the park's south entrance; staff found the location suitable and noted the donor would cover materials and installation costs. Danielle Sandifer told the commission the site holds family history and requested the installation so family members could continue annual visits and reflections. Commissioner Garcia Arcos moved approval with conditions requiring intentional watering for the first three years, certified-arborist oversight at planting, and replacement if the tree is defective; Commissioner Doran Parker seconded. The motion passed 7-0.

For Brentwood Park, staff presented a bench and plaque donation from Bridget Nichols in memory of her son, Brandon Beach. Staff proposed placing the bench near a user-defined walking path (to be formalized as a decomposed granite path), and to swap an existing marble bench at the north end so benches match new park amenities. Commissioners asked staff to inspect a nearby newly planted tree that appeared stressed; Ryan confirmed staff would review and replace if necessary. Commissioner Ledger moved to approve the Brentwood Park bench; the motion was seconded and carried 7-0.

Staff said both donations meet the city's donation-policy requirements and will incur minimal fiscal impact because donors pay for the donated items. Commissioners emphasized tree care and maintenance: several asked that the city ensure mulch, proper irrigation, and certified-arborist planting to maximize tree survival.
