The Columbia City board on Wednesday approved multiple street‑closing permits for private work and community events.
The board approved an alley‑closing permit for 308 North Main Street to allow foundation repairs conducted by Level Up Services; the work was described as scheduled Nov. 17–21 and the chair said the contractor must provide appropriate signage and barricades. "So this is for 308 North Main Street, and looks like, they're doing foundation repair on a house there," the chair said during the discussion.
Separately, the board approved the 13th annual Light of Christmas parade route for Friday, Nov. 28, with a rain date of Saturday, Nov. 29. The route was described as Van Buren Street from Walnut to Main with limited north/south blocks on Johnson. "So I'll make a motion we approve the street closing permit for the thirteenth annual Whitley County lighting Christmas parade, for Friday, November 28 with a rain date of Saturday, November 29 as presented," the chair said; the motion passed unanimously.
The board also approved a GFL drop‑box dumpster placement in front of 210 North Walnut Street for a house cleanup. The chair confirmed the contractor will use lighted barricades. "They have barricades? Oh, we have lighted barricades," the chair said before the permit was approved unanimously.
Finally, members approved a street‑closing permit for Old Settlers Days 2026, set for June 14–21, 2026, which keeps the customary Van Buren route (Walnut to Main) with parking restrictions on Jackson and Market and an additional closure requested for the south block of Chauncey Street.
All motions on these permits were seconded and recorded as unanimous votes during the meeting. The board did not vote on a primary plat replat submitted by Walmart Real Estate Business Trust during this segment; the chair described the filing as a parcel reconfiguration that does not change building footprints.
