Keller officials say Sports Park 83% complete; road closures and extra features planned

Cody, the Parks project lead, told the Keller Park & Recreation Board that the Sports Park is about 83% complete and that all new facilities are open while crews focus on finishing the interactive water feature and reconditioning the original four baseball fields. “Sports park is still going on 83% complete,” Cody said.
He outlined a timeline: crews will deliver heavy gravel to the infields, close Line Drive Parkway from the three-way stop back to the baseball fourplex after the fall season, complete milling and overlay work in January (beginning about Jan. 5 and lasting roughly four weeks), and finish the baseball fourplex by the end of February. Cody said the water feature and related interactive elements are expected to be completed later in spring.
Staff warned the board that several changes requested after the initial contractor bid—restrooms near Legacy Field (options ranged from two-stall to eight-stall units), additional sidewalks and concrete replacement, signage and vehicular bollards—were not included in the original contract. Cody said the Keller Development Corporation (KDC) has savings that could potentially cover some additions but that any extra work must be priced and then presented to city council for approval.
Cody recommended adding a rectangular, four-post shade structure at Chase Oaks to match existing park shades; he said the price is within the KDC budget and offered to place the item on the December council agenda if the board supported the choice.
Staff confirmed all Sports Park parking lots are finished and approved. Some rentals (for example Harvest Christian soccer events) were already refunded or flagged for cancellation because of the planned closures; staff said they would coordinate temporary access with adjacent businesses during construction, though an ADA connection from certain overflow parking locations will not be available.
The board discussed the timing for a ribbon-cutting celebration; Cody said staff is leaning to an April event when more of the interactive features will be safe and operable. The council will consider any post-construction additions that would increase scope or cost before staff implements them.
What’s next: staff will refine cost estimates for the proposed additions and seek council discussion and approval for those changes. The board will revisit scheduling and community access once the January roadwork timeline is firm.
