Indigenous Commission reviews reappointments, recruitment process and schedules December meeting

At the Nov. 13 meeting, the Flagstaff City Indigenous Commission reviewed upcoming vacancies and reappointment procedures and discussed outreach for recruiting new commissioners.

Staff member Rose told commissioners that several seats will be open and that applications are processed through the Flagstaff City application portal and typically remain active for 12 months. If an incumbent reapplies and is reappointed, Rose said the reappointment would result in a three-year term if council approves. She emphasized that the Flagstaff City Council is the appointing authority and that the commission will advertise openings on the city's website and Facebook.

Commissioners asked where postings would be made and whether targeted outreach would be used; staff said the city's website and Facebook are the usual posting places for city commissions and noted that an ex officio seat requires the applicant to meet a prior condition (previously discussed as "being on iPad" in earlier recruitment guidance) — the item was mentioned as a reminder of prior conversations rather than a new procedural change.

Commissioners also discussed a planned in-person December meeting and modest holiday appreciation on Dec. 4 so members could gather; staff said the city would cover some food and members could bring items if they wished. The commission confirmed the meeting schedule and adjourned at 11:36 a.m.

Next steps: staff will publish application links and advertising, follow up with any commissioner who has missed meetings regarding their seat status, and proceed with outreach for open seats.
