The York City review panel approved signage for Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop at 2 South George Street after the applicant agreed to amend the proposal to halo/backlit channel letters that meet the historic-district guidelines.

Josh Schwartz of Stoner Graphics presented plans for internally illuminated channel letters and partial vinyl window graphics. Board members explained that internally illuminated channel letters do not comply with the sign guidelines in the historic district and asked the applicant to present a backlit (halo) option. Schwartz offered a halo/backlit alternative and said he would provide stamped drawings if required.

The board moved to approve the application as amended—halo/backlit letters with window graphics allowed either inside or outside the pane (outside graphics would be explicitly added to the motion). Member (S3) moved the amended approval; a colleague seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote.

Board staff noted that the board has no jurisdiction over graphics placed on the inside of windows; if graphics are on the exterior of the window they would be added to the board’s conditions.
