Stratton Free Library asks Swansea for computer replacements, separate staff network and $12,000 for building work

A library presenter told the board the library’s computers are worn out and the current public Wi‑Fi leaves staff devices vulnerable to viruses and potential ransomware. “Our computers were 3 years old when we bought them, and they're now 14 years old,” the library presenter said, describing plans to replace one circulation‑desk laptop, update the director’s device to Windows 11 for consistency, add one public desktop and a laptop for staff use, and replace an aging public printer.
To improve security the trustees proposed adding a second internet connection so staff traffic is hardwired and separated from the public network, installing wiring so staff devices are on a tethered network, and adding UPS backup for desk machines to tolerate power outages. The trustees said an initial premium proposal (remote admin and 24/7 monitoring) had been pared back to a smaller, more affordable package that meets the library’s needs.
The presenters also outlined planned capital work: a CIP placeholder of about $12,000 for basement insulation and air‑sealing, a recent historic‑sensitive mortar repointing bid reported at approximately $2,800 (below the prior $5,000 CIP placeholder), and an intent to switch to lower‑cost bottled‑ink printers to reduce ongoing cartridge costs. Board members and trustees discussed printing fees (15¢ per page black, 25¢ color) and counts of equipment requested (two laptops, two desktops, and one printer as described by trustees).
The Selectmen did not take an immediate funding vote on Nov. 12; they said they will consider the requests as part of upcoming budget deliberations and CIP planning.
