The Dayton City Commission on Monday presented a proclamation honoring community organizer Darryl Dalton Sr. for more than a decade of neighborhood work. Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims Jr. read a proclamation praising Dalton’s ‘‘What’s Going On in Dayton, Ohio’’ platform, which the proclamation said has grown from about 100 members to roughly 75,000 and serves as a local information and engagement hub.
Darryl Dalton Sr. accepted the proclamation and described his personal motivation for starting the platform, saying, "I've been doing this for 11 years, and I continue to do it... Somebody gotta do it; I was once homeless myself, and I said once I get out to university, let's get back to the community." He thanked volunteers and local leaders who support the outreach and the annual Back-to-School Block Party that provides school supplies to thousands of children.
Commissioners offered brief remarks thanking Dalton for his leadership and mentoring of young people. Commissioner Charles Lott and others noted the role of volunteer events in strengthening neighborhoods and encouraged continued city support for community-based programs.
The commission did not take formal action on the proclamation (proclamations are ceremonial). The meeting proceeded to calendar business and public comment.
