Department of Capital Programs staff told the board on Oct. 15 that the system’s summer construction program met most targets, with dozens of projects completed and larger replacement projects continuing over multiple years.
Director Veil Jackson and senior project managers highlighted upcoming targets: the Cool Spring/Adelphi replacement facility is targeted for 2029, High Point High School replacement for 2031, and a new Northern Adelphi Area High School has a target delivery year of 2033. Joseph Howell reported that Suitland High School is roughly 49% complete with a Phase 1 delivery scheduled January 2026 and the auditorium slated for April 2026.
Senior project manager Ricardo Garcia said about 50 projects were in construction over the summer, with approximately 95% of those projects now finished aside from some athletic improvements. "We hit the target," Garcia said, listing 28 systemic replacements, building repairs, five code corrections, abatement, ADA updates, kitchen renovations, three playgrounds and five athletic improvements among summer work.
Board members asked whether funding for long‑range projects is guaranteed. Director Jackson cautioned that long‑range projects could be jeopardized by adverse budget scenarios or bond‑sale challenges, though near‑term FY27 capital is in a comparable position to other districts in the state.
The presentation was informational; no formal procurement or approvals were requested during the committee meeting.
