MOUND CITY — A routine consent‑agenda item prompted a detailed discussion about how the city presents financial information to the council and public.
A council member pulled the monthly payment claims packet citing that the current report lists dozens of individual checks without a clear year‑to‑date budget context. The councilor said the 30–50 page transaction listing is hard to interpret and asked staff to provide a high‑level run rate or fund balance summary in addition to the transaction list.
Council members and staff debated the value of line‑item transparency versus summary graphics. Finance staff noted the packet already contains a multi‑fund breakdown that is produced after month‑close and agreed they could make cumulative monthly reports and historical files accessible on the city website.
The council directed staff to research formats and bring back recommended templates and visual charts for inclusion in future packets and for publication on the city website, so members and residents can more easily see spending to date against budgeted amounts.
What’s next: Staff said they will present options and sample visuals to the finance committee and incorporate the agreed format into the 2026 reporting schedule.
