Ocean Shores parks board discusses walking path, basketball court repairs and park maintenance

Ocean Shores — At its Nov. 12 meeting the Ocean Shores Parks Board reviewed several maintenance and small‑capital items including a proposed walking path, basketball court repairs and storm cleanup at North Bay.
Board members reported the walking path concept was intended to be built by volunteers, including two volunteers who have backhoes and offered to dig the path trenches. The chair noted the board can choose whether to rely entirely on volunteers or ask the city to bid and contract the work. Gravel delivery for the path was estimated in the meeting at about $14,000–$15,000; the chair and other members emphasized that delivery costs — not the rock price — drive the total because of Ocean Shores’ distance from suppliers.
On basketball courts, Public Works staff (introduced as Ricky Victoriano) said the rims may have been missed or returned during prior personnel transitions; staff plans to order spring-return rims and attempt installation while a lift is available for the next three weeks. “We have a lift for 3 weeks, but it just depends on if we can get rims in time,” Ricky said.
The board also reviewed recent tractor/park inspections and storm repairs at North Bay — crews removed a fallen tree, filled the area with sand for now and will reseed. A pothole on the boat launch was flagged as a maintenance concern.
A board member proposed adding recycling containers at the highest-use parks (North Bay, Chinook and the skateboard park) to reduce litter and encourage recycling; members discussed piloting containers at a few parks first.
No formal motions were made to fund the walking path or recycling pilot during the meeting; the board directed staff to coordinate volunteer efforts and prioritization with a follow-up discussion next month.
The board adjourned at 1:52 p.m.; the next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Ocean Shores Library.
