Mesa Public Schools staff told the governing board on Nov. 14 that the district’s overall 2025 state letter grade is a B, with 24 schools earning an A and 37 a B, and noted progress in multiple indicators even as statewide third‑grade proficiency fell.
Dr. Glassmeyer said the district improved the number of schools gaining letter‑grade increases compared with last year: 20 schools moved up a letter grade, 40 maintained, and 13 declined. He highlighted indicator results: 33 of the district’s K‑8 schools reduced or kept chronic absenteeism below thresholds that contribute to acceleration and readiness points; 38 schools increased proficiency points by more than 2%; and 32 schools increased growth points by more than 2%.
The presentation also noted a statewide decline in third‑grade proficiency — a trend district staff and board members questioned during discussion. ‘‘Is this a lagging COVID piece?’’ a board member asked; Glassmeyer said researchers are still investigating and pointed to changes in indicator inclusion (for example, ORF/fluency metrics added to third‑grade scoring).
Board members asked what strategies drove the attendance gains; district staff credited a district Data Explorer Power BI dashboard, daily monitoring, focused family outreach and school‑level interventions. Staff offered to share anonymized training materials and trending reports with the board.
