The Mesa Unified School District governing board on Nov. 14 approved a personnel request that continues an organizational redesign intended to reduce district administrative positions and save money.
District staff described the redesign as a shift from roughly 150 to about 110 department‑level positions, with estimated savings of more than $3.5 million. Mister Wing said the postings were available to internal Mesa Public Schools candidates and the hiring process used multiple panels, including video interviews to efficiently screen large candidate pools. ‘‘The video interview provides an opportunity for individuals to be interviewed and maximize efficiencies,’’ he said.
Several board members raised concerns during discussion about transparency and fairness in the hiring process. Member Benson said community members perceive some hires as ‘‘predetermined’’ and criticized the speed and scheduling of video interviews; she asked for vigilance ensuring open and rigorous selection. Dr. Johnson and other district leaders described multi‑panel screening, finalist interviews and the opportunity for displaced staff to reapply for positions; Johnson said committees included school‑based and district employees and defended the EEOC‑aligned process.
The board recorded a 5‑yea vote to approve the personnel request including the addendum.
