Sayville UFSD honors student researchers, musicians and community-service projects

Superintendent Dr. Garris and Principal Stephanie Brinker led the meeting's recognition segment, praising athletes, music ensembles and students who represented the district in regional competitions and community projects.
"I wanna congratulate our girls soccer team," Dr. Garris said, and he highlighted Veterans Day programming across all five schools and an Athletic Hall of Fame induction.
Principal Stephanie Brinker introduced RISE technology teacher Rick Kaske, who recognized students Wesley Jones and Max Person for honorable mentions at the Long Island Science Conference and described their research topics—Jones' work on an ankle brace to reduce basketball injuries and Person's work on flow-resistance and regenerative energy for vehicles. Kaske also recognized a team (Gary Kinty, Rayna Donahue and Daniel Muszynski) for a World Health-related challenge addressing social media's effects on adolescents.
Kaske described the ACE Mentorship Program for architecture, engineering and construction as an after-school program that provides industry collaboration and scholarship opportunities, and he recognized students participating in that program. He also lauded Kenneth Ruf for participation in a Brookhaven National Laboratory high-school research program studying the effect of enrichment on nuclear fuel performance.
Principal Brinker noted a Girl Scout Silver Award project by Zoe and Emma that created a beach-cleanup station and a sharing shelf, stressing 50-plus hours of fundraising and planning and positive community feedback.
The recognitions covered athletics, performing arts, STEM research and community service across the district; board members applauded the students.
