Mayor West Mays read the proclamation, citing Cliff Long’s service since 1991 on the transportation committee, bond steering committee, Coppell Rotary Club and as a past Chamber of Commerce leader and former council member. Long accepted the recognition and offered brief remarks reflecting on local history and community service.
Multiple council members offered tributes. Council member Nevills said Long "set an amazing example" and called his counsel "absolutely amazing and imperative" to shaping future leaders. Council member Walker recalled Long’s mentorship in planning and zoning and said the shoes he leaves behind are hard to fill.
City Manager Mike Land and council members thanked public‑works and community‑experience staff for completing the Veterans Memorial Plaza on a tight timeline and noted a strong turnout for the dedication earlier in the day. "If you've been looking at the site up until about two weeks ago, you didn't know how that was gonna come together, quite frankly," Land said, and singled out Mike Garza and Jessica Carpenter for praise.
Mayor West Mays also highlighted the city manager’s recent induction as president of the International City and County Managers Association, saying the role brings national visibility to Coppell.
The council recessed later in the evening to executive session and plans to reconvene briefly before adjournment.
