Commissioners at the County Drug and Alcohol Commission meeting in Laredo received two treatment-provider updates: a local detox facility reported accreditation and state funding, and a faith-based recovery center said it reopened inpatient beds.
Jessica Pomeras, representing a local detox provider, said the facility achieved Joint Commission accreditation last month and began receiving state funds on Sept. 1. She told the commission the site had accepted roughly 70 referrals since state funding began and emphasized improved intake, follow-up and community-partner linkages to reduce early treatment departures. “As of last month, we are joint commission accredited,” Pomeras said.
Representatives from the Grace Center (identified in the meeting’s updates) said they reopened their inpatient program with capacity for 12 men and are working to raise about $2,500 to complete on-site shower and laundry facilities. The center described peer-support staffing and a plan to expand to additional beds early next year.
Stakeholder updates also covered school and community outreach. SCAMP’s Lisa Cabrio reviewed prevention and intervention programming the coalition offers under state and federal grants, and several attendees described Red Ribbon and school-based presentations that reached students and families. A United High School medical-campus student shared a family loss and the commission said a scholarship will be issued in the sister’s name.
The commission also discussed logistics: required affidavits, voter-registration and ID copies must be submitted by Nov. 21 for commissioners; the standing meeting time will be moved to 10:00 a.m. on the second Wednesday of the month to improve attendance. The chair closed the meeting after a motion to adjourn was passed at about 12:35 p.m.
