Opa-locka commission directs manager to study overnight commercial vehicle parking

The Opa-locka City Commission on Nov. 12 unanimously approved a resolution directing the city manager to conduct a feasibility study to identify locations and to develop fees and liability guidelines for overnight and after-hours commercial vehicle parking.
Vice Mayor Joseph L. Kelly, sponsor of the resolution, said the study aims to help residents and small-business owners who lack places to park work trucks and are at risk of fines. "In talking to residents and, in some cases, business owners, they don't have anywhere to really park their work trucks," Kelly said during the presentation.
Commissioner Louis B. Santiago pulled the item for additional detail but praised the outreach to residents and supported the measure. The resolution passed on a recorded roll call, 5-0.
Next steps: the manager will inventory potential city-owned properties or other feasible locations, develop a proposed fee schedule and criteria, consult with the city attorney on legal issues, and return to the commission with recommendations.
