Board honors Martin Behrendt; students perform and testify about music program

The Wenatchee School District Board of Directors opened the meeting with a tribute to outgoing board member Martin Behrendt and a performance by a combined middle school band.

Board members from across the dais shared personal recollections and thanked Behrendt for mentoring colleagues, chairing a pandemic-era levy citizens committee and advocating for students. One director said Behrendt had "modeled what it means to lead with both conviction and compassion," and acknowledged Behrendt's extra two years of board service to support district leadership transitions. Behrendt's wife and family were recognized in the audience.

Students from Orchard Middle School, Pioneer and Foothills performed for the board and several spoke about what music had taught them. A student told the board, "Music gives me peace and hope," and another credited band participation with increased confidence, leadership skills and a reason to come to school. The board noted that extracurricular programs such as music are funded predominantly through the district's four‑year education program and operations levy approved by voters.

Directors used the bright‑spot segment to thank teachers and staff for supporting student activities and called out recent community events including parades and Veterans Day assemblies. The meeting closed with further personal farewell remarks to Behrendt and a short statement from him.

The tribute underscored both the personal role long‑time board members play and the board's ongoing emphasis on student programs as the district moves into capital planning and bond discussions.
