Trails Committee’s Eagle Scout kiosk project cleared with negative determination for wetlands

The Town of Norwood Conservation Commission on Nov. 5 issued a Negative Determination of Applicability for a volunteer kiosk project led by an Eagle Scout and supported by the Trails Advisory Committee, clearing the way for three informational kiosks at Meadow Street, Ellis Field and the Father Max parking area.
Joe Greeley of the Trails Committee presented the proposal and said the scout, Yash, will design, fundraise and construct three kiosks modeled on an existing kiosk at Germany Brook. Greeley described each kiosk as approximately "4 to 4 and a half feet in width" with a single, locked plexiglass display.
Why it matters: The kiosks are intended to increase trail visibility and wayfinding for nearby residents and visitors without materially altering wetlands or resource areas. The committee proposed two siting options for each location (typically inside vs. outside a swing gate at trailheads) to allow DPW flexibility depending on subsurface conditions. The trails committee said the project is fully funded through donations and that the scout plans to buy materials the following week.
Conservation staff recommended a negative determination because the work is minor and will not significantly alter resource areas; DPW also indicated conceptual support. Commissioners voted to accept the negative determination and encouraged DPW coordination so the kiosk locations balance visibility with neighborhood impacts.
What’s next: The Trails Committee and the scout will coordinate final siting and installation with DPW and report back when installation is complete. The commission requested a photo or notification when the work is finished.
