City staff updated the City of Palo Alto and Palo Alto Unified School District Liaison Committee on Nov. 13 about ongoing grade-separation planning and upcoming council review dates.
Staff summarized community meetings held Sept. 30 at Mitchell Park that gathered feedback on refined grade-separation alternatives for Churchill Avenue, including alternative alignments at Seal and Meadow/Charleston. Staff said the rail (VIA/rail) committee will review the refined alternatives on Nov. 18 and that a special city council meeting is scheduled for Dec. 10 to review community feedback and rail-committee recommendations; an anticipated action item could come before council on Dec. 15.
Committee members stressed the district's interest because grade separation could have operational impacts on multiple schools, including bus-yard locations near Churchill Avenue. City members invited the district to share feedback at upcoming meetings and to participate in behind-the-scenes staff coordination. One school board member noted the district had already sent a letter of support for some elements and that staff will seek to provide timely input.
On related active-transportation work, staff said the city's bike-and-pedestrian transportation plan will be before council on Dec. 1 and that declining bike-rack counts suggest Safe Routes to School merits a future presentation to the liaison committee.
Staff and committee agreed to coordinate further and to bring grade-separation updates back to the liaison committee as council deliberations proceed.
