Palo Alto begins JED Foundation rollout for suicide-prevention work

City staff told the City of Palo Alto and Palo Alto Unified School District Liaison Committee on Nov. 13 that the city has kicked off work with the JED Foundation to support suicide-prevention planning and stakeholder engagement.
The council approved a contract with JED in September, staff said, and the city held a kickoff call with the JED project team. Staff identified Kiana Davis as the JED project manager, Dr. Katie Hurley as clinical advising and community programming senior director, Dr. Bert Michael as senior clinical director and Lisa Riese as the chief financial and administrative officer who will join as needed.
Committee members asked for clarity on the stakeholder list and whether the district would be included, noting that JED currently has a contract with the city but not the district. Members pressed whether JED will provide parent-education workshops (staff said a few workshops are built into the contract but exact workshop content remains to be defined) and whether the JED scope will include means-reduction measures and postvention planning.
City staff said JED will review city and district assets and past programs to target engagement, and staff asked committee members to submit specific follow-up questions for the JED team. Committee members recommended JED consider local data disaggregation—by student groups and by home language—to better target supports.
Staff said they expect JED might be in town in December and, if so, would bring the team to the liaison committee; they committed to sharing more detailed stakeholder parameters and contract specifics at a future meeting.
