Portage council approved a contract for emergency medical services with the Village of Pardeeville after staff described the proposal and operational impacts. The proposed arrangement was presented to start with $300,000 per year (initial offer discussed) and would add roughly 120–130 calls annually from Pardeeville, Pardeeville area townships and nearby coverage areas.
Fire/EMS leadership told council that the added revenue and call volume would allow the department to hire three additional personnel across shifts, staff a third paramedic ambulance more often and provide broader regional coverage. "Between that and a little bit from the town of [Wicena/Marcelin], I think that we figured it out," the chief said in explaining staffing and financial projections.
Councilors discussed ambulance rotation, mileage and transport billing ($28 per loaded mile plus transport fee discussed), and the need to plan for future ambulance purchases (the next unit was noted as anticipated for 2027). After questions about operational capacity and billing, the council moved and approved the EMS contract.
