The Portage Common Council voted to approve a new contract and related lease with Go Right Way Transportation following a finance committee recommendation from the RFP process. City staff said the provider was chosen through the RFP and transition planning was underway.
A company representative said Go Right Way will use the Portage School Bus Terminal for parking and dispatch and intends to retain most or all existing drivers. "Our plan is to retain, majority, if not all, the drivers and staff," the representative said. The company also described using GPS tracking and ridership data to improve scheduling and address complaints.
Council members asked about service continuity, vehicle maintenance and insurance language in the draft lease. One councilor flagged confusing lessor/lessee language in the contract and asked that the city attorney review insurance and maintenance clauses before final implementation. The council approved resolution 25‑026 (annual taxi contract) and then resolution 25‑027 (lease agreement) by roll call; staff noted the lease requires additional attorney review to confirm insurance and maintenance responsibilities.
The contract start date discussed was January 1; the council heard that rider fares will remain unchanged. City staff and the company said updated contact information will be posted on city channels if the service phone number changes.
