Heather Miller, a Garland parent and community member, told the Youth Council that a shortage of lit soccer fields is forcing youth teams to travel outside Garland for higher-level competition.
"There's not a lot of fields for the youth to practice on or play on," Miller said. "Most of the fields in Garland do not have lighting," she added, asking the council to "elevate it, and bring awareness" when members speak with the City Council so youth sports can remain in Garland.
Miller cited Winters Park as one local facility used for soccer but said many lit fields and higher-level competition venues are outside the city, which she said shifts both economic benefits and convenience away from Garland families.
A Parks & Recreation staff member offered to connect Miller with the city's athletics coordinator, Jared, and to share contact information and follow up by email. Staff said soccer associations do use city fields and suggested the Youth Council could help publicize available facilities once staff compiles details.
The Youth Council took Miller's comment as part of its agenda on community outreach and recreation; members discussed follow-up contacts and action items during committee breakouts.
