Christian County accepts MoDOT sign-inventory grant to map and rate road signs

The Christian County Commission approved acceptance of a $12,000 Traffic Engineering Assistance Program (TEEF) grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation to fund a countywide sign inventory.
Highway Department staff said the program will pay consultants to drive county roads, log GPS coordinates, sign types, condition ratings, and note whether signs meet standards. "There's a maximum award of $12,000 per agency and we got that maximum award, to perform a county wide sign inventory," the highway staff member said.
Staff explained the grant-funded work will be done in phases, starting with the area immediately outside Ozark and Nixa and expanding into the rest of the county if funding allows. "So in the application, I broke it down into basic...service areas," the highway staff member said. Using consultants will allow county crews to continue their scheduled maintenance duties while the inventory is completed.
A motion to accept the grant was made and the commission approved it by voice vote. County staff said signatures for grant paperwork would be gathered after the meeting.
The inventory is intended to create a mapped, rated database for sign maintenance prioritization and to support law enforcement by documenting sign locations and conditions. The commission did not provide a timeline for completion beyond initiating the first service area work.
