Athens Shade Tree Commission reports 29 trees planted, plans winter protection and schedules next meeting

At its Nov. 13 meeting, the Athens Shade Tree Commission reviewed recent planting activity and routine business. Speaker 2 reported, "We had 29 trees planted," and said about 30–35 volunteers (including OU students and community members) participated; Speaker 2 added that the team completed planting from the demonstration to the last tree in about 55 minutes.
Speaker 1 noted the newly planted 2-inch caliper trees are in a windy area and said some may need stakes because a few had leaned slightly after planting. To protect the trees this winter, Speaker 1 said they are working with Kevin Scurlock in the parts department to reuse corrugated black plastic piping as improvised tree tubes by cutting a slit and fitting them around the trunks.
During routine business the commission approved the meeting minutes (motion moved by Speaker 2; voted 'Aye') and agreed to skip the Dec. 11 meeting (motion moved by Speaker 2, seconded by Speaker 1; members indicated 'Aye'). Speaker 1 said the commission will tentatively reschedule its next meeting for Jan. 21 to align with the Planning Commission and will post updates on the website after confirming members' availability. The meeting concluded with well wishes to member Gene, who was absent after a work accident.
