Superintendent Whitney and Anna Tinsmeyer described a district‑sponsored community book study of The Anxious Generation at the Nov. 18 meeting and said Amazon provided a $2,500 grant to purchase 100 hard copies and materials in English and Spanish.
The district said 35 participants (18 staff members, 17 community/parents and one high‑school student) are participating in roundtable sessions facilitated at the Booth Building. Organizers asked participants to consider running their own local book studies to expand the effort, and the cohort will produce a set of actionable items that staff expect to share with the Board and student advisory groups. Superintendent Whitney said the goal is to cascade ideas into family and school practices that support healthier childhood development in a digital age.
Board members praised the initiative and suggested the board receive a brief report after the book‑study cohort concludes, including any recommended action items for schools and families.
The district noted the student response rate was limited by course workload, and staff plan alternative methods to share key findings with broader student populations.
Organizers said the grant left additional funds available should the district support future book‑study cohorts or materials.
