Anoka County proclaims November 2025 Adoption Awareness Month, highlights National Adoption Day

The Anoka County Board on November 10 adopted Resolution 2025-119 proclaiming November 2025 as Adoption Awareness Month and highlighted National Adoption Day events scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Anoka County Courthouse.
Chair Kamash introduced the resolution and said the county currently has 30 children who are state wards and that seven remain waiting to be matched with adoptive parents. “In 2024, Anoka County finalized the adoption of 12 children,” the chair said, and noted that National Adoption Day in the county will celebrate the adoption of 10 children into five families.
George Burrell, director of social services, thanked the board for supporting adoption awareness and described National Adoption Day as a longstanding, nationwide effort. “National Adoption Day is a collective grassroots effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States,” Burrell said, noting the program’s origins in 1999 and that it has celebrated more than 90,000 adoptions nationwide.
Burrell said county staff, judges and court administration will spend the morning in court for the event and that county staff look forward to supporting the families.
Commissioners who spoke described National Adoption Day as a joyful, meaningful event. Commissioner Gamache said it was “one of the favorite events of the year” and Commissioner Jepsen said the ceremonies bring “happy tears.”
The resolution passed unanimously. The board’s social services department is the lead for coordinating the Nov. 22 courthouse events and will follow up with an event summary to the board.
