The Central Consolidated Schools board heard requests from community partners and district staff about holiday distribution and an in-kind donation at its Nov. 14 meeting.
Jonathan Soh, program supervisor for Shiprock Dene Youth, asked the board to collaborate with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program to distribute toys across the district. Soh said the program collaborates with more than 50 schools and that last year about 3,000 children received toys. He said collection forms use first initial and last name for privacy and that the program serves children up to age 15.
"We collaborate with over 50 schools, every year to distribute Toys for Tots," Soh said, explaining the program's reach and the privacy steps on the sign-up form.
Dr. Harvey reported a donation from Save the Children consisting of pallets of books, clothing and toys with an estimated value of $20,289.56. "The pallets are going to be an estimated value of $20,289.56," Dr. Harvey said. Board members discussed potential supplemental tribal clothing funding and Dr. Harvey said he had followed up with the contact referenced in the meeting.
Board members thanked the presenters; there was no vote required to accept the donation report during the meeting. The items related to community distribution and the donation will be coordinated through district channels.
What happens next: district staff will coordinate logistics for Toys for Tots sign-ups, and Dr. Harvey will continue outreach related to additional cultural clothing resources that were mentioned during the meeting.
