Residents press Meriwether commissioners over dust, debris and late-night truck activity

Residents who live near Jerrell Road and the Roosevelt Highway told the Meriwether County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 10 they are experiencing persistent dust, roadside debris and late-night truck activity from a nearby commercial operation.

David Lyle, of 695 Jerrell Road, said trucks park overnight, kick up dust that settles in nearby woods, and leave nuts and bolts that have caused multiple flat tires for his household and neighbors. "I've had 6 flats," Lyle said, and he left photographs and a box of debris with county staff for review.

Jimmy Crawford, who said he lives a quarter-mile from the operation on Roosevelt Highway, presented photos showing large dust clouds when 18-wheelers exit the facility and complained of continuous noise and steel beams piled near the travel lane, creating a roadside hazard. Crawford said the accumulation of dust and loose metal makes the road slick during heavy rains and slows emergency response.

Commissioners acknowledged the complaints and asked staff to copy and distribute the photographs and to follow up with appropriate county departments and state contacts. Staff told the board they would investigate enforcement options and revisit whether signage, dust suppression or a truck-route designation would help. The board's later adoption of a no-through-truck ordinance was discussed in the meeting as a general tool for limiting cut-through truck traffic, though exemptions for businesses with direct access to restricted roads were debated.

No enforcement action was recorded on the public docket the night of the meeting; staff said they would make follow-up contacts and report back.
