State advisers form 13‑member gifted and talented work group to build resources and pathways

The Louisiana Department of Education’s Division of Diverse Learners announced a new gifted‑and‑talented work group composed of 13 stakeholders from districts across the state to advise on identification, programming and supports. Carolyn Wilkinson, the Division’s gifted‑and‑talented coordinator, told the advisory panel the group includes representation from Monroe, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge, St. Charles, St. Tammany, Vernon, Livingston, St. Mary and Lafayette.
Wilkinson said the group distilled priorities into five focus areas: identification and access; program funding, staffing and oversight; teacher pipeline and professional learning; screening instruments and evaluation updates; and student well‑being and communication. “We are incredibly excited to put together a gifted and talented work group with 13 very passionate stakeholders from across the state,” she said.
Panel members asked about parent representation and resource distribution. One member asked whether more parents could be added; Wilkinson said the work group includes a parent and the panel discussed making resources available on the Department website as a vetted resource bank with exemplars for districts to use.
Next steps: staff said the Department will vet and post exemplars and tools and coordinate with the educator talent and workforce development team to explore certification and retention pathways for GT educators.
