San Juan Parks & Recreation honors Austin Middle and Edith Ethel Carmen Elementary for participation

The San Juan Commission recognized local schools during presentations at its Sept. 23 special-call meeting.
Vamira Moreno, interim director of Parks & Recreation, announced Austin Middle School as the 2024–25 middle-school participation winner, saying the school had an enrollment listed as 217 sixth‑graders with 105 participants (the packet lists participation as "48.39%"). "This year, Austin is our proud winner for the bragging rights for the team trophy they carry around," Moreno said, and noted the students compete in volleyball, tackle football, soccer and basketball.
Moreno also presented the elementary-division award to Edith Ethel Carmen Elementary, which staff said had roughly 298 students with about 43.57% registered in Parks & Recreation programs and has held the elementary trophy multiple years. City leaders thanked school district staff (PSJA ISD) for allowing use of school facilities for practices and events.
Commissioners and staff praised coaches, parents and program supervisors including race supervisor Alex Lopez for sustaining the city’s youth programs while Parks & Recreation facilities are being completed.
