San Juan staff recommends $279,966 in CDBG allocations for FY2026; commission approves preliminary plan

The San Juan Commission approved a preliminary work plan for the Hidalgo County Urban County Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for fiscal year 2026 during its Sept. 23 meeting.
Monica Gomez, interim director of planning and zoning, said the staff recommended allocations totaling $279,966 for FY2026. Gomez outlined staff recommendations: $3,000 for general administration, $247,896 for street improvements on Guadalupe and San Ramon Street (Ado Nadelles Estates along Sargent/Entrevenor Road), $10,000 for Amigos El Valle to provide home-delivered meals, $5,000 for the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council to assist 30 low‑income residents with in-home support, $10,000 for Nostra Clinic to deliver medical, dental and behavioral services to 75 uninsured residents, and $5,000 for the Children's Advocacy Center of Hidalgo and Starr Counties to support abused and neglected children.
"The Sierra del San Juan was awarded a total of $279,966 for the fiscal year of 2026," Gomez said. She also referenced a packet attachment showing six years of past distributions.
A commissioner moved to approve the preliminary work plan; the motion passed by voice vote. The approved plan is a preliminary allocation and may be subject to final federal award rules and subsequent contract actions.
