Joyce Bullock Elementary named AVID showcase; Levy to host two showcase events

Joyce Bullock Elementary was recognized as an AVID showcase school; AVID Center and district staff described the program’s routines and invited district staff to a Levy-only showcase on Jan. 28 and a national AVID showcase on April 8. The board heard student demonstrations and applauded the program’s emphasis on student ownership.
Joyce Bullock Elementary School was presented to the Levy County School Board as an AVID showcase school during the board meeting. Carolee Prince of AVID Center said the designation recognizes sustained implementation of AVID strategies and the district’s efforts to prepare students for college and careers. “Our mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society,” Prince said.
Presenters described classroom routines — including WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, organization) practices — and demonstrated a student quick-write and peer-turn activity to show how younger students engage in explicit instruction and student ownership. Teachers and site coordinators identified in the presentation included Priscilla Hyatt, Kelpreet (site coordinator), and Kira Lee Prince. Students Grace and Jace participated in the demonstration; the presenters timed a quick-write exercise for one minute and thirty seconds to illustrate the routine.
District staff said 504 educators from Levy County have attended AVID instructional training and that the school’s practices placed Joyce Bullock above district proficiency-growth averages in earlier slides shown to the board. The presenters invited board members and district staff to two upcoming showcases: a Levy-only showcase for district staff on January 28 and an AVID Center showcase on April 8 that will include visitors from outside the county.
Board members praised the presentation and thanked the Joyce Bullock team for work that staff said creates a schoolwide culture of college and career readiness at the primary level. The board recessed for five minutes after the presentation before resuming the remainder of the agenda.
