The Petersburg Borough Library Board voted on Nov. 10 to adopt updated versions of the customer code of conduct and the child behavior supervision policy.
Staff presented the customer code of conduct revisions as primarily editorial changes intended "to improve the policy's quality, readability, and overall usability for both staff and public," and said the drafts had been reviewed multiple times. During discussion a staff member noted, "And, yes, we used AI to help us with readability," while explaining the goal was clearer, more positive language for staff to use when interacting with patrons. Board members praised the reorganized divisions as easier to navigate for staff and patrons.
The board then reviewed changes to the child behavior supervision policy, which now draws a clearer distinction between staff responsibilities and caregiver responsibilities when children are left unattended. The policy clarifies when staff should contact law enforcement or protective services for welfare checks and that library staff are not designated mandatory reporters. The board voted to adopt both revised policies during the meeting.
Board members asked that the revised policies be posted at the front desk and made available to staff; staff confirmed a posted copy and front-desk guidance will be provided. The board recorded the votes in favor of both policy revisions.
