Food banks report sudden demand spike as SNAP/CalFresh interruptions ripple through Humboldt County

"When the delays in SNAP benefits ... were announced, we saw 40 percent increase immediately in the number of folks coming to us," Robbins said. She added that Food for People estimates an $842,000 offset or loss in food value compared with expectations for the prior year and that the organization is operating at high capacity.
Robbins noted that Humboldt County issues about $6,000,000 in CalFresh benefits every month and that total CalFresh issuance last year was roughly $70,000,000. She said a projected 12% reduction in recipients — tied to new administration requirements discussed at the forum — could remove about $8,500,000 of purchasing power from the local economy.
The food sector has pursued local fundraising to backfill lost federal purchasing: Robbins said community donations raised nearly $200,000 to preserve a local purchasing program that had been abruptly canceled. She urged continued community support and preparedness for rising long-term demand if program changes shift costs to state and local systems.
