St. Joseph County approves transfer of three parcels to Redevelopment Commission for New Carlisle area

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 12 approved resolution R-19-20-25 to transfer three county-owned parcels to the St. Joseph County Redevelopment Commission.
Bill Shallyw, economic development director, told the board the parcels were acquired years ago with redevelopment commission funds and are on the acquisition list for the New Carlisle Economic Development Area. He identified the properties as 30233 Edison Road (a former house that has been demolished), a strip on the north side of Edison Road at Snowberry Road proposed to be dedicated as public right-of-way, and 494 and 496 East Michigan Street (the site of an old trailer park) where predevelopment work is underway for possible projects including consideration of a proposed train station.
Shallyw said the redevelopment commission earlier approved a matching resolution contingent on the board’s approval. Commissioners voted to transfer the properties to the Redevelopment Commission; the motion carried by recorded ayes from Commissioners Morton, Hazen and Maxmeier.
Shallyw emphasized there is no final decision on a train station and that additional approvals and presentations to the New Carlisle Economic Development board are pending.
Outcome: resolution R-19-20-25 approved; properties now on the Redevelopment Commission’s ownership list for future development actions.
