Tampa council grants multiple continuances after neighborhood objections to stacked land‑use dockets

The meeting opened with a request from planning staff that the council rule on a continuance for file TACPA2411, a comprehensive plan amendment tied to a rezoning and vacation application. Applicant Truett Gardner said coordination with solid waste and contractual timing made January 15 unworkable and urged a later coordinated date; neighborhood speakers said the frequent continuances had discouraged public turnout and asked the council to avoid stacking large dockets.
Councilman Carlson moved to continue TACPA2411 to Feb. 12, 2026, on the condition that the applicant re‑notice the public hearing; Councilman Maniscalco seconded. The motion passed by voice vote; the chair announced the hearing will be heard on 02/12/2026. During the same sequence the council granted first continuances or schedule changes for several related items: VAC258 (moved to 02/12/2026), REZ2548 (continued to 02/12/2026), and REZ25112 (continued to 01/15/2026) after applicants agreed to renotice.
Several neighborhood representatives spoke during the continuance discussion. Michelle Battilero of the Historic Hyde Park Art Gallery said members did not attend because the request was presented as a "done deal" and asked that the council avoid putting contentious items on the same night. Joe Hanlon, a Hyde Park resident, opposed continuing the matter. Bobby O'Brien of the Spanish Town Creek Civic Association said he changed his view to support a continuance to avoid an unfairly long evening for residents and experts. Applicants and staff repeatedly said scheduling constraints and contract deadlines drove the timing requests.
The council also removed two items (REZ25100 and a separate REZ‑numbered item) from the agenda after they were found to be mis‑noticed or withdrawn by applicants. The council then adopted the amended agenda and proceeded to the remainder of the docket.
What happens next: TACPA2411 and the companion cases will be renoticed and considered at the Feb. 12, 2026 hearing; withdrawn items will not be heard on this docket.
