East Central ISD previews High School No. 2: site, phased capacity and expected ground‑breaking window

East Central ISD trustees were shown design renderings and a site plan for High School No. 2 during the Nov. 6 workshop and heard a phased schedule that would allow Phase 1 to open in 2028 if permitting and procurement proceed on schedule.
Presenters said the district’s selected site is nearly 124 acres split by a floodplain; the buildable portion on the right side of the property will host the initial campus. The plan includes infrastructure sized for up to 3,200 students eventually, though the initial Phase 1 build will serve about 2,200 students.
Design features outlined included two academic floors in the front portion of the campus, CTE and visual‑arts facilities, a cafetorium with a full stage and stadium seating for performances and UIL events, and athletics complexes (full‑size turf football, baseball and softball fields). Presenters listed capacities: baseball 531, softball 495, and noted varsity football is expected to be played at the new stadium when built.
On schedule and procurement, staff said the project is being split into two GMPs (site work and trades) and they hope to bring the GMP(s) to the board in December or early January. Earthwork could begin in January provided permitting (including FEMA floodplain coordination) proceeds as planned.
Presenters emphasized extensive stakeholder input in design phases — meetings with students, CTE and curriculum staff, and community reviews — and said several design checkpoints (25%, 50%, 75%, near final) guided revisions. The board had questions about stadium capacities and permitting; no construction contract was approved at the workshop.
What's next: staff anticipate returning with GMPs and permitting updates; if approvals and permitting align, earthmoving could begin in early 2026 with a target occupancy in 2028 for Phase 1.
