Phil, the Tree Commission liaison to the Conservation Commission, reported Nov. 10 that tree maintenance and planting contracted work has been completed to the satisfaction of the town's tree warden and that about 20 trees were scheduled for planting this fall. He described a planned dedication of a higher-quality red maple at Paradise Valley Park as part of the Rhode Island 250 commemoration, with a dedication event slated for early May.
Phil also described operational concerns for the windmill at Paradise Valley Park, saying tree regrowth behind a stone wall has affected the windmill's operation and that selective thinning is being considered so the windmill can operate more often. "A lot of trees have come up there since the windmill was restored, and it really affects the operation of the windmill," Phil said.
Members noted a presentation by Nathaniel Cornell on forest and biodiversity; slides are available. The commission discussed involving students — particularly from the new high school landscaping project — in tree-planting as a way to foster stewardship and to address planting/placement questions.
Separately, the commission heard that the comprehensive plan update process is nearing its drafting completion, with the commission's work expected to be finished by late 2026 before going to the Planning Board and Town Council for additional hearings and adoption.
