Parks Director Justin Ledbetter told the TIPS Committee the parks and recreation department has two remaining major events for the calendar year: a turkey giveaway this Saturday at noon at Browns Mill and the city’s annual Light Up Stonecrest celebration in December, which the department plans to start at 5 p.m.
Ledbetter said staff prepared to serve more than 500 turkeys and food baskets and cited donations from sponsors including Publix and Walmart. "We prepared to serve over 500," Ledbetter said, and noted last year's distribution reached nearly 800 turkeys and baskets.
The Light Up Stonecrest program will feature Santa, seasonal music and family activities; parks staff said they will illuminate ball fields to aid visibility and deploy staff and public-safety personnel for traffic direction. Ledbetter also agreed to follow up the next day on a reported unhoused tent at Barrington Park after a committee member raised the issue.
Next steps: Parks staff will proceed with volunteer coordination and logistics for both events and provide any necessary follow-up to council members about the Barrington Park encampment.
