Caroline County board backs adopting 2021 mechanical code, proposes inspections and local registration

Caroline County’s Construction Trades Board voted to move forward with a package of code changes designed to tighten oversight of HVAC and electrical work in the county and to ask the county commissioners to consider the changes at a workshop in early December. Board members recommended adopting the chapter 1 (scope and administration) portions of the 2021 International Mechanical Code and agreed inspections should be required for new construction, most unit replacements, and full-home HVAC installs.
The board chair summarized earlier staff workshops and told members the board should present a clear list of what it wants the commissioners to approve. “Motion carries. Go for it all,” the chair said after board members moved and seconded a recommendation to present the full package to the commissioners. Levi, a contractor who reviewed the draft code, said, “As far as the code goes, I didn’t see anything in there that really stuck out to me that was…tremendously terrible.”
