Portage County commissioners approve a slate of grant applications, contract awards, vehicle and facility actions

The Portage County Board of Commissioners approved a series of motions authorizing grant applications, contract awards and routine budget actions during a regular meeting.
Citing Ohio Revised Code Section 305.3(k), the board directed the auditor’s office to process bills, ACH payments, wires and journal vouchers contingent on verification by the county auditor and the Department of Budget and Financial Management. Commissioners also moved to process budget amendments reviewed by county financial staff and approved a transfer from Fund 4260 to the Motor Vehicle and Gas Tax Fund (1201).
The board authorized the Portage County engineer to apply for multiple federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) applications through the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study. The motions covered resurfacing of Prospect Street and sections of Summit Road in Ravenna and Ridgetown Township; a State Route 44 improvement project; and the Stowe Street and Trail Improvement Project in the city of Kent.
Procurement and contract actions included declaring a county Ford F-150 obsolete and authorizing a lease for a 2026 Jeep Compass Latitude for the Building Department; authorizing sale by public option of front-load dumpsters from the Solid Waste Management District; and declaring MS Consultants Inc. the most qualified firm to enter negotiations for construction administration services on the Newton Falls bridge replacement project. The board also accepted contract modification No. 1 between Lake Erie Railway Company and the county for preliminary engineering on the Judson Road Bridge rehabilitation project.
The commissioners approved an amendment to an existing biosolids disposal contract to add funds to Republic Services of Ohio LLC (doing business as the countywide recycling and disposal facility) and agreed to a separate service agreement between Portage County Jobs and Family Services and Access Family Services Inc. to provide Ohio early prevention service coordination and outreach.
During facilities updates, Shannon, the county’s internal services director, said Congressman Joyce’s office requested to renew its lease and that staff would prepare a resolution. She reported the tenant’s current rent and a proposed increase and flagged that several offices used for guardianship functions lack baseboard heating; she cited a cost estimate of about $15,000 to install baseboard heat and said temporary heaters were purchased while the county budgets a permanent fix.
Roll-call votes were recorded on each motion with commissioners responding in the affirmative as shown in the meeting record. The meeting recessed for public comment, took no substantive oral public comments when it reconvened and then adjourned.
