The board approved regulated sign application 32-2025 from Toledo Sign for Toledo Clinic at 4900 North McCord Road after zoning staff reported the proposal met the city's sign code and had no objections from the zoning office.
Christopher Rosenthal, representing Black Rose Cigar, attended to discuss mural application 33-2025. Tim Burns, the city zoning administrator, said the mural was already painted using UV-stable paint and protected with a clear anti-graffiti coat. Members praised the mural’s design and unanimously approved the application.
The board considered regulated sign application 34-2025 for Flavor Flow at 6481 Monroe Street amid detailed discussion about whether the sign included the word “Kratom” and the potential legal risk if neighboring jurisdictions or the state enacted bans. Tim Burns told the board the applicant had proposed removing the Kratom reference. The board voted to approve 34-2025 with three conditions: the sign must not include the word “Kratom,” any lit “smoke shop” signage must be removed, and no product advertising may be displayed in the front windows, consistent with the zoning code’s prohibition on in-window product marketing.
Two building-review applications submitted by Fred Suede for Daniel Suede (30-2025 and 31-2025) — for new buildings at 6566 Brent Road — were tabled because applicants did not provide color renderings; staff had only received physical siding and roof samples.
Application 35-2025, a façade renovation for DW 28 Sylvania Square LLC at 5801 Monroe Street, was also tabled for lack of color/rendering detail. The board approved application 36-2025 for a new monument sign on the same property; staff confirmed the proposed sign meets setback and code requirements and the applicant will remove the existing pole sign when the new monument sign is installed.
Tim Burns confirmed there were no additions and the board adjourned. The tabled façade and color-review items will return when applicants submit the requested renderings and clarifying materials.
