County operations staff updated the Highway Committee on paving, vegetation control and winter readiness.
"Today, we are out paving out by Jake's and Pioneer," Operations Supervisor (S6) said, describing that crews placed the final mat on one side Monday and were finishing the other side and intersections. S6 said county crack‑filling on county roads is largely complete with two towns still to do.
Staff described vegetation control after herbicide application: wild parsnip responded well to spray but native bluestem and other species remained tall, prompting crews to mow south of County Road 94. The department also reported rip‑rap and guardrail repairs near County Road 25 and cleaned a box culvert south of Downsville using rented equipment, finishing the job much faster than anticipated.
Highway Department staff (S2) outlined winter preparations: "salt sand mixing starting next week," plus brine system training and equipment calibration for state routes. Staff and shop forepersons said they brought conveyors and loaders back into service and planned another surplus auction to help offset equipment purchases.
The committee also discussed staffing. Highway staff (S2) said a mechanic/welder position resigned and two recruitment rounds produced few candidates; staff plan to reword the posting toward mechanic skills and rely on internal staff for fabrication tasks while recruiting.
No formal action was taken on operations items; staff said projects would continue and winter readiness work would proceed as equipment arrives.
