Board considers "peer court" pilot as alternative to suspensions

Nicole Kramer, vice chairperson of the Charles County Board of Education, summarized a proposal from Mr. Gammons of the Student Engagement and Conduct Office and Chairperson Morley for a peer court program.
Kramer said the concept was borrowed from a Utah school system that officials described as having success in reducing student behaviors that cause disruption. "The program could be used as an alternative to suspension for certain offenses," Kramer said, and the board was told the plan would be piloted at one or two schools to evaluate effectiveness and limit administrative burden.
Kramer said Dr. Navarre will bring a more detailed plan for potential implementation to a future meeting. The board did not vote on the proposal at the Nov. 4 meeting; the item was presented for discussion and future planning.
