Council honors Rigoberta Menchú Tum, community organizations and student scholars
Summary

At its November meeting, the Los Angeles City Council presented recognitions and certificates to community leaders, nonprofits and students.
Councilmember Jackie Goldberg introduced Rigoberta Menchú Tum, describing her 1992 Nobel Peace Prize and her foundation’s work educating and assisting returning indigenous Guatemalan families. Menchú thanked the council, saying she wanted to “bring a message that pays homage to cultural diversity” and that she would "always be here with you in your struggles and your efforts." A ceremonial resolution paid tribute to her work.
Councilmember Alex Padilla presented Los Angeles Neighborhood Housing Services (founded 1984) and recognized Jorge Valle for organizing Pride Day neighborhood projects in Pacoima that include planting trees, securing street lighting and surface improvements. Jorge Valle thanked the council for support and described concrete neighborhood improvements such as street resurfacing and curb ramps.
The council also honored 14 semifinalists from Van Nuys High School in the National Merit Scholarship Program, noting the students scored in the top 2% nationally; several students were called forward to receive certificates.
These items were presented as ceremonial recognitions; no policy or budget actions were taken as a result of these presentations.
