The committee approved staff's recommendation to include the remaining contents of Curtis Corner Middle School in the demolition scope rather than undertake a time-consuming district-by-district salvage and inventory process.
Staff explained Curtis Corner has accumulated large amounts of unused material over several years and that completing the kind of inventory and redistribution that Wakefield required would take more time and local dollars than are available. Including the materials in the demolition contract could reduce the district's logistical burden and potentially reduce the demolition bid by allowing contractors to account for salvageable scrap value. Staff said items with historical or commemorative value (trophies, plaques) will be removed and archived prior to demolition.
Board members raised the tradeoffs: while including contents could reduce immediate storage and labor costs, contractors might increase bids if dealing with more on-site materials raises complexity. Staff responded that prior experience and conversations with the building contractor and design team suggested better bid outcomes when the contractor can account for salvage and disposal as part of a single scope. The motion to dispose as recommended passed by voice vote; staff will coordinate archival removal and document transfers as needed.
