The committee voted to accept an independent transportation route review offered through the Rhode Island Department of Education at a quoted cost of $6,500 for South Kingstown.
Superintendent and staff described the RIDE review as an independent analysis of in-district bus routing with preliminary observations about route consolidation and potential interdistrict opportunities (multiple districts combining bids to reduce total buses). The district currently contracts transportation externally and staff said each bus represents approximately $100,000 of annual operating cost; an independent review could provide evidence for more efficient routing in future bids or negotiations.
Board members asked what the review would produce and how the district would use the findings. Staff said the review would provide route-efficiency recommendations the district could raise with its current contractor or use to inform the upcoming bid; examples include consolidating routes or reassigning pickups where feasible. The committee cited previous regional use of similar analyses, the relatively low price point, and the timing ahead of the FY27 bid cycle as reasons to accept the review.
The motion was made, seconded and approved by voice vote; staff said funds were available to contract the review without reallocating core transportation budget items.
