Students brief board on mental-health clubs and leadership programs

Students and club advisers presented two student-led mental-health and leadership efforts to the Pottsgrove School District board.
A student leader said the Avidum/Oviedom club began about three years ago and has grown into one of the largest clubs in the school, participating in the county mental-health youth symposium and leading a 'talk workshop' for multiple high schools. "Our message is kind of to strive and support the youth and break the stigma around mental health," a club presenter said, describing the symposium and plans to bring more students to subsequent workshops at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) Center.
Students also described Dreaming Forward, a leadership program that met Oct. 7 and focused on belonging and basic human needs. "The main focus of our first session ... was belonging and the basic human needs," a student presenter said, outlining activities designed to build self-awareness, relationship skills and leadership. Participants said they will hold additional sessions and explore bringing materials back into Pottsgrove classrooms and possibly forming an ongoing club.
Board members thanked the students, and the superintendent highlighted county-level collaboration. The presentations included named advisers and cited an MCIU-hosted workshop and a planned open-sharing model to expand mental-health leadership across participating schools.
