Advocate proposes 'Walk in Our Shoes' week for Rockdale leaders to improve district transparency
Summary
LaKesha Wallace proposed a weeklong immersion allowing board members and district leaders to substitute teach and rotate across schools to gather firsthand observations and data to inform decisions and build trust.
At the Rockdale County Board of Education work session, LaKesha Wallace, founder of Tapestry Educational Solutions and an EDS school psychologist candidate, proposed a district program she called "Walk in Our Shoes." The initiative would invite district leaders, board members and community partners to substitute teach, assist in classrooms and rotate across schools for one full week to experience daily operations and gather qualitative and quantitative data.
Wallace said the program is modeled on the concept behind Undercover Boss and is intended to increase transparency, strengthen relationships between leadership and schools, and provide data to inform strategic planning and resource allocation. She tied the proposal to RCPS strategic goals including community engagement, positive culture and operational effectiveness.
Wallace also said the week would not be evaluative; rather, it would focus on understanding classroom realities and converting observations into actionable data that could be used to improve attendance, behavior and instruction. She suggested that a program of this scope is rare among Georgia districts and could position Rockdale County Public Schools as a leader in human-centered educational leadership.
No formal board action was taken on the proposal during the work session; Wallace provided a folder for board members and offered to partner with the district on pilot planning.
